DIY: Sunburst Mirror...

This past weekend we tackled one of our DIY projects on the list, a sunburst mirror! We have a large open wall in the guest room and I wanted something that would fill the space, and be artful and interesting. I love how it turned out. Here's how it was made. 

~ We started with spare strips of oak we had. 

~ Selected a spare piece of wood for a sturdy base and large enough for the mirror.

 ~ Start cutting the strips of oak. 

We measured the space beforehand and knew we wanted the mirror at 36", 

so we cut strips between 15" -18" for variation.

- Start laying out your base and nailing it down.

~ After we nailed down the first base layer, TJ measured and cut the tips of the strips at an angle to fit in between the nailed down strips.

~ Start nailing down the second layer. On the second layer we flipped the oak strips over to add variation in the color.

~ Cut and add additional small strips to the tips of the strips. The small pieces were glued down. 

~ Once the glue is dry, carefully flip over the mirror and add the picture hanger. This also depends on the size of your mirror. Ours was 36". {You could add this before attaching all the strips, but it will make your base uneven}.

Then we added a piece of a 2x4 to the center so the mirror would be raised. Then we glued the mirror down (using this glue) to the 2x4 piece {which I forgot to get a picture of because I was excited that it was almost complete.}

~ Then we hung and admired.

 Our total cost: 

wood, nails, glue = free

mirror = $.45 {from thrift store}

picture framing kit = $5.00

total: $5.45

Project Sneak Peek: Guest Room...

Project: Laundry Room Renovation

Remember last month when I showed you my sister's hutch makeover. It inspired her and her husband to renovate their laundry room to make it more functional and pretty; because no one really loves doing the laundry. ;) As always our consults where all via email, text, and phone and her inspiration were fabric remnants in yellow and gray. The renovation included: painting the walls, new flooring, stacking the washer/dryer, new cabinet and reusing an old countertop piece {painted it}, building a wall to house/hide the water heater {it is accessible}, new lighting found in a flea market and painted, new artwork, and building shelves and drying racks. Overall it took them about two weeks to complete, but they said it was worth it!

Project: Hutch Renovation

A few months ago my sister contacted about redoing her hutch in her kitchen. I told her it was a great idea; the trick was getting her husband to agree. The hutch was passed down from his family and he wasn't too sure about updating it. I told her to tell him that it was past its prime and they would be doing it a favor with a little face lift. ;) My sister and I live 4 hours apart, so all our conversations/design consults are through phone, texts, and emails. After a short conversation, some inspiration images, and her hubby's agreement they got started and finished it in a few short days.

The After

For the color I suggested White Dove by Benjamin Moore, because it is a soft white, with a contrasting color for the back. She picked Silver Sage by Restoration Hardware. I also suggested she remove the upper doors and detailing to open it up for more display space and pick out new hardware. She also lined the drawers with a fun paper. A job well done! After finishing the hutch {which her husband loved}, they got inspired to redo their laundry room. The before and afters are coming soon.
